The Cleveland Guardians should be all over some well-known sluggers this offseason.
This team has all the right pieces and foundation to build around, but their struggles at the plate held them back over and over.
With that in mind, and considering the New York Mets’ unprecedented debacle, some believe that they could make a run at Pete Alonso.
Unfortunately, as positive as that would obviously be for the organization, team insider Paul Hoynes just doesn’t see that happening right now:
“The Polar Bear [Pete Alonso] made $30 million this season and drove in 126 runs in his walk year for the Mets. It would be great to see him in the middle of the Guards’ lineup, but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Hoynes wrote.
Alonso would certainly solve some of the team’s offensive issues and make life quite easier for Jose Ramirez.
He’s the type of hard-hitting player who could shift this entire lineup right out of the gate.
Still, this team may not be willing to give up what it takes to get him, let alone meet his financial aspirations, to grant him a contract extension.
As things stand now, it seems that the Guardians are going to focus on mid and low-tier reinforcements who fit their usual payment ranges.
The Guardians aren’t the type of team that’s going to go all-in and spend big bucks or valuable assets to try to compete with the bigger markets.
Instead, they will continue to focus on developing their own prospects, and it’s not like they won’t have several young stars to build around for many more years to come.
Even so, it would be nice to see them go outside of the mold for a change and make this type of move.
