The Cleveland Guardians might be on the prowl for another outfielder. They have some promising young players to build around for years to come, but they also need some proven veterans.
That’s particularly true if they end up trading Steven Kwan. The All-Star will most likely draw plenty of interest this offseason. With that in mind, insider Tim Stebbins made a case for the Guardians to trade for St. Louis Cardinals All-Star Brendan Donovan.
“The Guardians are looking to improve their offensive production next season, and the trade and free agent markets each are avenues that Cleveland could explore this winter for potential external additions. Could the Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan be a fit? Overall, Donovan has a well-rounded profile, and with his track record, would help lengthen the Guardians’ lineup. But Cleveland would have the flexibility to get Donovan out there as well, certainly given [Chase] DeLauter’s ability to play center and [C.J.] Kayfus’ ability to play first base,” Stebbins wrote.
Fans would much rather have an elite defensive player and a fan favorite like Kwan. That being said, if the Guardians are either unwilling or unable to pay him what he wants in a contract extension, it might be better to make the most of his trade value.
In addition to prospects DeLauter and Kayfus, the Guardians could turn to George Valera and Jhonkensy Noel. That being said, several of these young players have struggled with injuries, and even if that weren’t the case, the team can’t pin all of its hopes on young and unproven players.
Donovan might not be a superstar, but he’s the type of pickup who could help Cleveland stay competitive in the AL playoff race. He can bring some offense to the table, and he might be in the price range its front office would actually consider.
