The Cleveland Guardians have one of the best bullpens in the game. However, they’ve had to turn to it too often in recent years.
That’s why analyst Paul Hoynes is urging the Guardians to address some concerns about Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis.
“The one thing I worry about with him and Gaddis is they have been used so much the last two years. They have each made 162 appearances in the last two years, that includes the postseason,” Hoynes said. “It’s really important for (the Guardians) to add another late-inning reliever, another veteran guy that can really take the load off these guys.”
That makes perfect sense. Even great relievers can fall from grace once their arm starts paying the price for all the wear and tear their team puts them through. Gaddis and Smith have been very good, but they have limits, like any pitcher.
Some analysts believe the Guardians will address those concerns by adding several reliable arms to the mix this offseason. Then again, given how the organization operates, it will either trade for one or sign another to a short-term contract.
Former Milwaukee Brewers star Devin Williams is a free agent coming off a disappointing season with the New York Yankees. He should garner interest, but the Guardians might be able to sign him at a discount on a short-term “prove it” contract.
Whatever the case, the Guardians have to move on from closer Emmanuel Clase, who is unlikely to play in the majors again because of his involvement in a sports gambling scandal. Whether they’ll give Smith the full-time job or will find a closer to put him back in his previous setup role remains to be seen, but all options should be on the table.
