The Cleveland Guardians selected Travis Bazzana with the first overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, sparking immediate excitement about his potential at the Major League level.
Bazzana dominated as a hitter at Oregon State, and his transition to the minors has only strengthened that reputation.
Depending on how the offseason unfolds, there remains a real possibility he could earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Analyst Joe Noga believes Guardians fans should temper their expectations and remain patient with the young prospect as he continues his development.
“A lot of these folks want to put the cart before the horse, and there’s a progression there,” Noga cautioned when addressing a listener question about Bazzana potentially making the opening day lineup in 2026. “One of the things that he has to prove is that he can stay healthy, and that hasn’t been the case this past year.”
The biggest obstacle facing Bazzana in 2026 may not be competition for the second base job, but his ability to stay on the field.
Injuries have already pushed back what likely would have been a 2025 Major League debut.
He missed two months early in the season after suffering an oblique injury at Double-A, then saw his year end prematurely in September with a left oblique strain at Triple-A.
He finished last season at Triple-A with a .225 batting average across 26 games, but his .858 OPS told a more promising story.
His .420 on-base percentage and .438 slugging percentage reflected his ability to reach base and drive the ball with authority.
Despite the setbacks, Bazzana advanced through multiple levels and positioned himself for a potentially significant 2026 season.
The Guardians have utility players capable of handling second base, but none carry Bazzana’s top-tier prospect status.
Bazzana spent last offseason in Colorado working with now-former coach Kai Correa on a throwing program designed to refine his defensive skills.
His defense continues to develop, but the progress has been evident throughout his minor league journey.
