The Cleveland Guardians face significant roster decisions this offseason, with left fielder Steven Kwan emerging as a potential trade candidate. The 28-year-old remains under club control through the 2027 season before reaching free agency.
Trade speculation surrounding Kwan has intensified in recent weeks, with multiple organizations reportedly monitoring his availability.
Bleacher Report this week identified Kwan as the Guardians player most likely to be traded, citing the New York Yankees as a potential suitor among interested teams.
“OF Steven Kwan,” Kerry Miller wrote. “One winter removed from trading away all of Josh Naylor, Andrés Giménez and Myles Straw in the name of reducing costs, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see the Guardians part with their final two years of control on this two-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove left fielder. In fact, this could be where the aforementioned Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz (and more from NYY) lands, as the Yankees could clearly use Kwan.”
Kwan completed his fourth MLB season with 170 hits, 11 home runs, and 56 RBIs across 156 games while batting .272. He generated considerable trade interest at last summer’s deadline but remained in Cleveland after the organization held firm on asking for a premium prospect in return.
That decision reflected management’s commitment to retaining their young talent at that moment.
The Guardians typically pursue long-term extensions with young players before arbitration eligibility, but Kwan’s path differs. Already in arbitration with two seasons remaining before free agency, securing a long-term deal appears unlikely given his current status.
This timing dynamic positions Cleveland to evaluate his trade market value more seriously. The organization also needs additional power production, and dealing Kwan could yield prospects or a middle-order bat to address that need heading into 2026.
