The Cleveland Guardians need as much help as they can get right now.
They’ve struggled to get going in June, and hopefully, their recent 11-2 win against the Cincinnati Reds will give them some much-needed momentum.
Notably, it seems like help will be on the way.
While Bo Naylor has done a solid job as the starting catcher, there are some legitimate questions about the depth behind him.
Fortunately, manager Stephen Vogt recently gave a positive update about backup Austin Hedges, who’s trending in the right direction to get back on the field, according to Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com.
“Vogt gave an encouraging report on catcher Austin Hedges, who is on the seven-day concussion injured list. It would not be a surprise if they activate him before Friday’s series opener in Seattle,” Hoynes wrote.
He sustained the concussion getting hit by a backswing from New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Hedges won’t take over Naylor, but having him gives the team a solid option on defense.
For his part, Naylor needs to improve his plate discipline and contact.
He’s hitting .192 but has 19 RBIs and nine home runs, and at 25 years old, he’s got plenty of untapped potential.
Hedges has never been known for his offense, but he’s one of the best defensive catchers in the game.
