The Cleveland Guardians are in a tough situation right now.
They’re not what most people would call a World Series contender, but they’re not a bad team by any means, either.
The trade deadline is inching closer, and there’s a strong case to be made for being buyers, but also for being sellers.
With that in mind, MLB analysts Bruce Drennan and Gene Winters talked about the potential trade candidates if the Guardians decide to sell.
In the latest edition of the “Bruce Drennan Show,” they both agreed that OF Lane Thomas and 1B Carlos Santana would most likely be the odd men out.
Winters added that Will Brennan could also be a candidate, although he doubted he would have any sort of value in the trade market:
“If the [Guardians], heaven forbid, has to be a seller, I would think Lane Thomas, Carlos Santana, anybody else come to mind? But, those are two obvious ones, are they not?” Drennan asked.
“Absolutely, those are the guys you would end up moving. I don’t see a [Daniel] Schneemann or any of these younger guys that you have because you still want to see them develop. Maybe a guy like Will Brennan, but does he have any real value?” Winters said.

Per Winters, the Guardians are more likely to commit to their young movement and allow them to grow through their mistakes, as opposed to trading some of them to make a postseason push.
That makes sense, especially considering how this team has operated in the past.
The Guardians have never been the kind of overly-aggressive team that trades away their best prospects to get some proven players.
Still, we’re talking about a team that made the ALCS last season, and they’ve been almost as good this year.
If they get hot and reach the trade deadline in a position to take down the Detroit Tigers atop the division, they should strongly consider taking a different approach and swinging for the fences instead.
