The Cleveland Guardians dropped another game on Saturday, this time 5-3 to the Houston Astros.
They have now lost three straight and four of their last five.
Jose Ramirez’s game-tying home run in the seventh inning was not enough to prevent the Astros to win it in extras.
In the meantime, the Guardians were left lamenting lost opportunities to score.
One came in the sixth frame when they had three men on base and one out.
They had already scored a run earlier in that inning, but many more could, and probably should, have come.
David Fry and Will Wilson both struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
It was a low point for Wilson, who has struggled to produce much with the playing time he has received lately.
He has been, together with Jhonkensy Noel, one of the primary targets of recent criticism by fans because of his lousy play.
Wilson won his promotion fair and square after weeks of strong play in the minors but has looked overmatched in MLB.
After going 0-for-4 on Saturday (with four strikeouts), his season line is now a paltry .184/.273/.245 in 56 plate appearances.
Right now, the lower third of the Guardians lineup is a big problem, and unfortunately, Wilson hasn’t been able to contribute.
Much like Noel, his spot on the active roster could be in jeopardy if he doesn’t start producing soon.
The recent skids of Wilson, Noel, Bo Naylor, and other hitters on the Guardians have made it clear that the team badly needs reinforcements ahead of the deadline if they want to make a deep postseason run.
