The Cleveland Guardians have high hopes and expectations for Travis Bazzana.
The former first-overall pick has gotten off to a red-hot start to the year in the Minor Leagues.
That’s why it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the jewel of the Guardians’ impressive farm system make it to the Big Show at some point in the campaign.
With that in mind, Guardians executive Chris Antonetti revealed their plan to develop him.
“He’s been at second base and DH. We would like Travis to continue to develop as a second baseman for now. We want him to develop skill and competency there,” said Chris Antonetti, president of baseball operations. “As he does that, and gets closer to the major leagues, we can determine if it makes sense to add versatility. There’s lots of foundational skills we’re still looking to build with Travis.”
Some thought that Bazzana would be better suited to play shortstop, but given how well Gabriel Arias has done so far, it might make more sense for them to develop him at second base, which is actually his natural position.
The Australian infielder has showcased impressive versatility in the past, but his offense has been even more mesmerizing.
The Guardians bounced back from their worrisome start to the season, and they’re now 14-9 on the year.
There were some major concerns about their offensive firepower – or lack thereof – and rightfully so, but it seems like Stephen Vogt has found the perfect balance in his lineup.
That would make it a little tougher for their first-overall pick to get consistent playing time in the second half of the season, and it’s not like they can afford to let anybody grow through their mistakes.
Nevertheless, whenever you have a prospect as talented as Bazzana, you have to find a way to get him on the field.
