After posting a rather disappointing .714 OPS in spring training and a .697 mark in the majors last season, the Cleveland Guardians decided to option Will Brennan, who had been a mainstay in their lineup in recent seasons, to Triple-A to open the year.
The Guardians needed to accommodate new outfield acquisition Nolan Jones, and Brennan was the one who lost his roster spot and was back in the minor leagues.
Far from crumbling, however, Brennan is trying to show he belongs in the majors and is playing like a man who wants another chance.
He recently extended his on-base streak and kept showing he can hit the ball hard.
“Cleveland Guardians OF Will Brennan reached base 2x tonight (1-3 R BB) for Columbus, including this base hit in the 6th inning that came off the bat at 105.8 mph. Brennan extends his on-base streak to 11 straight games. During streak: 17-43 9R 3(2B) 1HR 9RBI 5BB 2SB .395 AVG .458 OBP,” Guardians Prospective wrote on X.

The Clippers played early on Wednesday, so Brennan put that streak to the test again.
Even if he can’t extend it, what he has done in these games is nothing short of amazing.
A .395 batting average and a .458 OBP are incredible marks, and he has sprinkled in some power and speed.
It will likely take an injury or two to get him back to the majors, and the fact that the Guardians optioned him to open the year doesn’t mean he has been erased from their plans.
Quite the contrary, because if he can keep this up, he will force his way back up at some point.
