The Cleveland Guardians got a big boost from Logan Allen on Tuesday.
The southpaw hurler was in command against the Baltimore Orioles, keeping the momentum going after a solid outing in the first homestand of the season.
He threw 5.2 scoreless frames to help Stephen Vogt’s team improve to 9-7.
Following the 6-3 win, he tipped his hat to catcher Bo Naylor, praising him for ‘making things easy’ for him:
“We were able to keep guys off balance using the sweeper. It was a testament to Bo (Naylor) calling a great game. We executed well,” Allen said. “When you’re on the same page as your catcher, it makes it easy out there. It takes a lot of thinking out of it.”
Allen got his first win of the season.
He’s now 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA, and he has yet to allow an earned run in the past three starts.
On the downside, he hadn’t gone deep into games, and Tuesday’s win marked the first time he pitched through the fifth inning this season.
Allen dominated with his four-seamer, with his fastball averaging 90.2 mph.
He walked two and allowed two hits while striking out six hitters, and he kept the opposition guessing from start to finish.
Unfortunately, the shaky bullpen was a bit of an issue again, allowing three runs to make it interesting.
At least Emmanuel Clase only allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
The starting rotation, however, is starting to catch fire, going 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA in the recent six-game homestand.
They allowed just six earned runs in 31 innings, and they struck out 34 hitters and issued just 15 walks.
Hopefully, the once-great bullpen will get back to its dominant ways, as this team has the potential to have the best overall pitching staff in the Majors.
