The Cleveland Guardians are known for their excellent player development staff.
It’s, in large part, what allowed them to exceed expectations in such a shocking way in 2024 despite not really spending much money in free agency: thanks to some savvy staffers and specialists, Cleveland gets the best out of its players and help them become the best versions of themselves.
However, year after year, the Guards lose top executives, staffers and experts in specific fields to other teams that offer them a promotion and better earning opportunities.
The 2024 campaign isn’t even over, yet the exodus has already started.
“We have hired Robert Cerfolio as our new Assistant General Manager, Player Development & Performance. Cerfolio, 32, has worked in the Cleveland Guardians organization for the last decade, most recently serving as the team’s Director of Player Development,” the St. Louis Cardinals posted on X.

Cerfolio had slowly worked his way up the Guardians’ ranks with a creative mind and an eye for talent.
He is highly respected in the organization and in the league as a whole, which is why St. Louis is offering him a chance to become assistant general manager plus other titles.
He is a very solid candidate to become a general manager one day.
He is one of the masterminds behind Cleveland’s recent success.
According to Cardinals insider Katie Woo, Cerfolio will immediately begin a search for a farm director and a director of performance for his new team.

Losing Cerfolio is a significant blow for the Guardians’ organization.
It remains to be seen if they make a move to replace him or if they do it internally.
