The Cleveland Guardians’ season came to an unfortunate end on Saturday night at the hands of the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the ALCS as Juan Soto smashed a 3-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to put his Yanks up for good, 5-2 and send them to their first World Series since 2009.
The Guardians had a tremendous run, and of course, they couldn’t have done it without the unsung heroes at home, the wives, girlfriends, and loved ones who supported them the whole way.
Reliever Cade Smith’s wife shared a heartfelt post on Instagram after the game, saying “So many emotions, so many tears and smiles. Bittersweet. Thank you, Cleveland, for gracing us with the opportunity to have an incredible rookie year and be a part of something special.”

She added, “You’ve become a family to us and we’re forever grateful. This organization, this city, is truly something incredible. Like no other. Our Guardians persevered and pushed to the end. They gave up a fight. What a year for our men, what a year for this city.”
The 25-year-old Smith burst onto the scene this year for the Guardians and immediately became a pivotal member of one of the league’s best bullpens after posting a 1.91 ERA with 103 strikeouts in 74 appearances.
He also pitched in nine of the team’s ten playoff games, and like his fellow bullpen mates, saw his number take a slight dip from his regular season dominance and ultimately result in his Guardians falling just short of the Fall Classic.
Regardless, his wife’s message was great and a strong reminder of what’s most important in this game.
