The Cleveland Guardians are moving on to the ALCS after Saturday’s thrilling comeback win in Game 5 over the Detroit Tigers and will now take on the New York Yankees with a trip to the World Series on the line.
Lane Thomas flipped the script of the entire game with his huge fifth-inning grand slam off likely AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, and teammate David Fry had an honest admission about the huge moment after the game.
In the postgame on-field interview, Fry said “I think I blacked out for him. I mean, that was so cool” when asked about the grand slam.

Fry gave credit to Skubal for being a tough at-bat but said “It’s who we are. We get behind, we come back, we bunt, we hit bombs, and we create chaos.”
Fry batted second in the game and went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts and finished the series 4-for-16 with a home run and five RBIs.
Thomas drove in five of the team’s seven runs in Game 5 and finished the series with nine RBIs total.
Cleveland’s offense had been struggling after getting shut out in Games 2 and 3, and it was looking to be headed that direction again as Skubal was cruising and on a 28-inning scoreless streak dating back nearly a month, but Thomas quickly flipped the series on its head and drove a dagger into the heart of the Tigers.
Thomas has struggled since being acquired from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline, but he delivered a couple of massive blows in the ALDS that the team will need to see more of if it is to take down the Yankees.
