Austin Hedges is more than just a catcher for the Cleveland Guardians. He is much more than the man behind Parker Messick’s breakout campaign. Hedges means everything to the organization.
The soon-to-be free agent is universally seen as one of the most important guys in the dugout and the clubhouse. He is, you could say, the glue that keeps it all together.
If players want advice, Hedges is there to offer his insight, earned through years of playing at the highest level. He is also a likeable guy and a respected leader.
That’s why his return should be a priority for the Guardians. Besides his contributions as a player, which we will discuss in a minute, his valuable presence off the field gives Cleveland an edge. Team insider Paul Hoynes explains:
“Sometimes there’s guys that make a difference on a ball club even though they don’t play every day. He is certainly kind of the touchstone of the Guardians. The value in him probably goes beyond what he does on the field,” Hoynes said. “As a player, you have a much deeper connection with other players. You have a much different relationship with them. As a coach, you’re not on the field every day with all those other guys.”
Hedges has built an impeccable reputation in four seasons in Cleveland, five if we include his short cameo in 2020. He is an excellent defensive catcher, yes, but he is also one of the best at calling games and guiding pitchers behind the plate. This is why Messick finds it so enjoyable to work with him, and many additional pitchers say the same.
Additionally, he cared enough and worked hard to improve as a hitter, and for the first time in his career, Hedges finished a regular season as a league-average offensive player, certified by his 100 wRC+. At 34 years old, he seems to be improving as a batter, which is obviously a nice bonus.
Hedges loves it in Cleveland, and he didn’t hide it for leverage. He would like to return. The team loves him back. It’s a matter of coming to terms and being on the same page to make it happen and make it official.
