The Cleveland Guardians did not get the result they wanted on Saturday night, but they may have gotten something just as valuable for the rest of the American League Championship Series. Travis Bazzana, who had been searching for a big moment all postseason, finally found his swing in Game 4 against the Tampa Bay Rays. The rookie second baseman reached base three times in the 7-3 loss at Progressive Field and delivered Cleveland’s biggest hit of the night. With the series now tied at two games apiece, a hot Bazzana could be exactly what the Guardians need over the final stretch.
“Cleveland #Guardians (2B) Travis Bazzana had his best game of the post-season tonight reaching base 3x (2-3 R HR RBI BB) including his 1st career playoff home run in the 7th inning vs the Rays. HR – 107.8 EV Single – 98.9 EV,” Guardians Prospective wrote.

Bazzana finished the night 2-3 with a home run, a walk, a run scored and an RBI. His homer came after the Rays had broken the game open with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Facing a 5-1 deficit, Bazzana jumped on a pitch and drove it into the right field bleachers with an exit velocity of 107.8 mph. That sparked a rally, as Patrick Bailey, pinch hitter Angel MartÃnez and Brayan Rocchio followed with three straight singles to cut the lead to 5-3. His single earlier in the game was also hit hard, leaving the bat at 98.9 mph.
It was a welcome sight after a quiet start to the series. Bazzana had collected just two hits in eleven at bats through the first three games of the ALCS, and he also had a tough time in the division series, where the White Sox attacked him with five different left-handed pitchers. Saturday was his best game of the postseason by a wide margin.
The night was not perfect. Bazzana made an error at second base in the first inning, though Shawn Armstrong pitched around it to keep the Rays off the board. But the way he swung the bat later in the game is what Cleveland will remember most.
That swing looked a lot like the one he had in September. Bazzana finished the regular season on a tear, hitting six home runs with a .613 slugging percentage and a .978 OPS during the final month. The former No. 1 overall pick made the American League All-Star team as a rookie and finished the year with fifteen homers and 40 extra-base hits. Over one nineteen game stretch late in the season, he hit .318 with six homers, helping carry the Guardians past the White Sox in the division race.
Now Cleveland needs that version of Bazzana once again. The Rays’ pitching staff is heavy on right-handers, which sets up well for the left-handed hitting rookie. Game 5 will feature Tampa Bay ace Drew Rasmussen, a right-hander, giving Bazzana a favorable matchup from a platoon standpoint as he tries to build on Saturday’s performance.
The Guardians will need contributions from everywhere in what has become a best-of-three series. José RamÃrez is hitting .400 in the ALCS, Chase DeLauter has been one of the toughest outs in the lineup, and Bailey has delivered several big hits. Adding a confident Bazzana to that group would give Cleveland’s offense a big boost.
Bazzana found his October swing on Saturday night. If he keeps it going, Cleveland could be one step closer to the World Series.
