The Cleveland Guardians needed four huge outs to protect a one-run lead in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday afternoon, and they handed the ball to the one pitcher they trust more than anyone. Cade Smith delivered once again. With the tying run standing on third base and two outs in the eighth inning, the Guardians closer entered and battled Yandy DÃaz through a ten pitch at bat before getting him to swing through strike three as Progressive Field erupted.
Smith then came back out for the ninth and retired the Rays in order to seal a 3-2 win that gave Cleveland a two games to one lead in the series.

Smith needed just eighteen pitches to record those four outs, throwing thirteen of them for strikes. He did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out two batters, picking up his second save of the postseason.
The bigger picture is even more impressive. Through this postseason, Smith has thrown nine innings and allowed just two hits, one earned run and one walk while striking out thirteen batters. That works out to a 1.00 ERA and a WHIP of one third of a baserunner per inning, numbers that put him among the most dominant relievers in baseball this October. The only run he has allowed came on a solo home run by Miguel Vargas in the ninth inning of Game 4 of the division series, when Cleveland already held a big lead.
What makes his run even more remarkable is the workload. Smith has pitched in seven of Cleveland’s eight postseason games, with the only exception coming in Game 2 of this series in Tampa Bay. He threw two innings to close out Game 3 of the division series, pitched again in Game 4 and then recorded five outs in the Game 5 clincher against the White Sox. Stephen Vogt admitted after that series that the Guardians had asked way too much of Smith, but said he answered every time. On Thursday, after a rare day of rest, he answered again.
The strikeout of DÃaz was the defining moment of the game. DÃaz, who began his career in Cleveland, fouled off pitch after pitch with the tying run ninety feet away, but Smith never gave in. When DÃaz finally swung and missed, the crowd of more than 30,000 sounded twice as loud.
Now the Guardians are two wins away from their first World Series appearance since 2016. Game 4 is set for Friday at Progressive Field. If Cleveland can carry a lead into the late innings again, there is no one Vogt would rather have on the mound than Smith.
