The Cleveland Guardians and the Tampa Bay Rays split the first two games of the American League Championship Series at Tropicana Field on Monday and Tuesday. The series is tied 1-1, with a day off on Wednesday and an afternoon affair at Progressive Field on Thursday.
What’s left of the series can now be interpreted or analyzed in a variety of ways. The Guardians’ official X handle said, on Tuesday night, that it’s now essentially a best-of-five series, and it makes plenty of sense.
However, analyst Nick Camino has another way of seeing things, and it involves a short-term objective that could put the Guardians in a position to win the battle.
“New short-term goal for the Guardians: Win a 3-game series in Cleveland. Period. You take 2-of-3 at Progressive Field, you get two cracks at it in a Game 6 or Game 7 in St. Pete to advance to the World Series. Brought it home tied 1-1, now win a series here,” Camino posted.

It’s a nice way to simplify the next few days for Cleveland and set a realistic short-term goal within the series. There’s nothing wrong with that.
If the Guardians take at least two of the upcoming three games at Progressive Field, they would have to return to Tropicana Field, but the next win would clinch them a spot in the World Series. Of course, if Cleveland can sweep all three games at home, it would be an ideal scenario, but taking two out of three at home against the team with the best record in the American League is definitely not a bad outcome.
The Guardians will try to put that short-term goal in motion on Thursday behind right-hander Gavin Williams. The ‘Big Rig’ boasts a brilliant 1.54 ERA in 11.2 postseason innings this year. The most impressive part of his profile is that he has struck out a whopping 24 batters.
Williams led the American League in strikeouts this year, so the Rays will have their hands full on Thursday. It represents an excellent opportunity for the Guardians to regain the series lead after Tuesday’s loss.
