For an MLB team to mount a successful pennant race, it needs unsung heroes to emerge during that effort. Those players can then etch their names into their team’s lore and become fan favorites forever.
If the Cleveland Guardians manage to win the AL Central this year, they will have at least one of those players. Outfielder Petey Halpin provided some unforgettable heroics in a recent win against the Chicago White Sox, and it could be what propels the Guardians to their third straight division title.
In his 80th career game, Halpin hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning, powering the Guardians to a 6-3 victory that put them back in sole possession of first place for the first time since July 3. It came after the center fielder lost a fly ball in the sun, leading to a first-inning triple.
After Halpin recovered from the potentially costly miscue, insider Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com gushed about the “fearless” Guardians rookie, who has earned the respect of his pitchers with his hustling style of play.
“[Petey Halpin] told the pitchers that he’d run into walls for these guys and now he’s doing it. He’s fearless out there when it comes to playing defense. He’s a rookie and he’s energetic and he’s just happy to be here,” Hoynes said. “For him to hit that home run yesterday, that was a moment that’ll be frozen in time in Cleveland baseball history, no matter what happens the rest of the way.”
Halpin has been back and forth between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus this season as a replacement for injured major league outfielders. He was in the lineup on Wednesday because Chase DeLauter and Angel Martinez were sidelined.
Not only was it just his fourth major league home run, but it was just his fourth hit against a left-handed pitcher. Earlier in the game, shortly after his mistake in the field, he singled and scored in the third inning.
A third-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of high school, Halpin has worked his way up through Cleveland’s minor league system. He made his MLB debut last season and has taken on a bigger role this year.
Halpin has nine extra-base hits and 10 stolen bases in his 74 appearances with a slash line of .217/.256/.325. Though those are not overwhelming statistics, manager Stephen Vogt has praised the 24-year-old as an important part of the team as a locker room presence.
With even bigger games ahead for the Guardians, chances are Halpin will have another chance at another huge moment.
