At this point of the season, every single game counts for the Cleveland Guardians. Not just their own games, but those of their rivals in the fight for a postseason spot.
The Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers on Thursday to tie Cleveland at the top of the AL Central standings with a 78-75 record. That’s significant for them because they own the tiebreaker against the Guardians after taking the season series 7-6.
The Guardians, however, did get a break on Thursday. Not because of the White Sox, but thanks to the Boston Red Sox beating the Texas Rangers 4-3.
That Red Sox victory has huge implications for the race for the third and last Wild Card spot in the American League.

The Guardians are currently a Wild Card team despite being on a tie with Chicago at the top of the division, because they lost the season series. However, they would still be in the playoffs via that final Wild Card.
Right now, they boast a two-game lead over the Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays, and a three-game cushion over the Baltimore Orioles. With precious few games to play, that’s significant breathing room, but Cleveland can’t afford to slip these days.
For what it’s worth, the Guardians own the tiebreaker against Baltimore, but lost the season series against Toronto and Texas. Any tie against either of those two rivals would result in elimination for Stephen Vogt’s team.
The New York Yankees and the Red Sox are virtually locked as the first two Wild Card squads. The real fights are happening for the third and final spot and the AL Central and the AL West divisions.
The Guardians have three series remaining in their 2026 regular season calendar: this weekend at home against the Athletics, and two straight road matchups vs. the Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals.
Nobody said it was going to be easy, but the Guardians have a postseason ticket in their hands if they can defend it in their remaining nine games.
