Parker Messick is no longer just turning heads in Cleveland. He is now turning heads on national television.
MLB Network dedicated a segment Wednesday night to the rookie left-hander, with hosts posing a bold question to his panel: is Messick building a real case to be an AL Cy Young finalist? Analysts Dan Plesac and Tom Verducci joined the discussion, and neither one seemed to have much doubt about what they were watching.
Messick had just wrapped a start against the White Sox that helped push Cleveland into first place in the AL Central, and Verducci made it clear the numbers from that outing backed up the eye test.
Verducci did not hold back on his praise, saying Messick simply “looks like a full tank of gas.”
“Parker Messick, his velo is up a full tick and a half. 72% strikes. He saw 26 batters today, and threw 24 balls. He’s a young pitcher running a marathon for the first time, and he’s getting to September, who looks like a full tank of gas. It’s just so impressive to watch him pitch,” Verducci said.

Verducci pointed out that Messick’s fastball velocity has climbed noticeably, up close to a tick and a half from where it sat earlier in the season. He also highlighted the command behind it, noting Messick threw strikes on roughly 72 percent of his pitches and needed only 24 balls to work through 26 batters faced. For a pitcher deep into his first full professional season, that kind of efficiency this late in the year is rare.
For the Guardians, the timing could not be better. They now sit atop the AL Central, and a stretch run built around a starter who is somehow getting stronger instead of weaker gives the rotation a real edge heading into October. Messick was always considered a promising arm. Now, national analysts are starting to talk about him in a completely different tier.
If the Cy Young conversation continues to grow the way Wednesday’s discussion suggested it might, Messick will not just be a name Guardians fans are excited about. He will be a name the entire league is forced to take seriously.
