Cleveland’s climb back to first place in the American League Central carries plenty of weight given where this team stood just a couple of weeks ago, and Stephen Vogt made sure nobody in the clubhouse got too comfortable about it. Speaking with reporters after Wednesday’s 6-3 win over the White Sox, Vogt kept his emotions in check even while acknowledging how good the moment felt.

Cleveland trailed in the division for much of the summer before clawing its way back into contention, and Vogt made clear that reclaiming the top spot with nine games left means little if the Guardians cannot hold onto it. His focus remains squarely on preparing for whatever comes next rather than celebrating a temporary hold on first place.
Vogt reserved his most enthusiastic praise for Parker Messick, whose start against Chicago may have been the best of his rookie season. The left-hander worked around early trouble and limited the White Sox to three runs over six innings while striking out eight, giving Cleveland the kind of innings it needed in a game the club could not afford to lose. Vogt did not hold back when describing the outing, calling it an absolute gem and noting that Messick looked strong enough to have kept pitching well beyond the sixth inning had the situation called for it.
There is real reason for confidence in a Guardians club that has found ways to win in all sorts of different fashions lately, from dramatic walk-off finishes to a rookie pitcher delivering his best start when it mattered most. At the same time, Vogt understands that nine games remain.
Cleveland has earned the right to feel good about where it stands after taking two of three from the division’s other top contender, but as the manager made clear, the real work is only beginning as the Guardians try to turn a share of first place into something that actually matters when the regular season wraps up.
