Gavin Williams put together the finest strikeout performance of his career Tuesday night, and the numbers behind it point toward a piece of franchise history that remains within reach over the season’s final month.
Williams struck out a career-high thirteen batters across seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing just two singles as Cleveland cruised to a 6-1 win at Progressive Field. That outing pushed his season total to 217 strikeouts, and it came on the heels of his worst start of the year the week before in Anaheim, when he lasted just one and one-third innings.

Meisel noted that Williams now sits 33 strikeouts shy of the 250 mark for the season, a total that only a handful of pitchers in franchise history have ever reached. The list of names who have accomplished that feat reads like a who’s who of Cleveland pitching history, including Shane Bieber, Corey Kluber, Sam McDowell, Luis Tiant, Herb Score and Bob Feller. Reaching that number would place Williams alongside some of the most decorated arms to ever pitch for this organization, and given the way he has trended over his last several outings, the possibility no longer feels far-fetched.
Williams’ thirteen-strikeout performance also carried significance beyond the career high itself. It marked his tenth double-digit strikeout game of the season, tying him with Milwaukee’s Jacob Misiorowski for the most in all of baseball, and it made him just the fourth Cleveland starter in the divisional era to reach that total in a single year. His eight games with at least eleven strikeouts this season stand as the most in the majors as well, reinforcing just how dominant his stuff has looked in recent weeks. Williams got stronger as Tuesday’s outing progressed, striking out six of the final eight batters he faced, a trend that has become increasingly common as he has built momentum through the second half.
With roughly a month remaining in the regular season, Williams has real time and real opportunity to climb toward that 250 strikeout threshold. Cleveland’s rotation figures to lean heavily on him down the stretch as the Guardians continue chasing a postseason spot, and every additional start gives him another chance to add his name to one of the most exclusive lists in franchise history.
