The Cleveland Guardians could use an injection of talent from their own farm system. Thankfully, they have potentially impactful players there, but none of them can leave more of a mark than first baseman Ralphy Velazquez.
Velazquez, the Guardians’ first-round draft pick in 2023, has broken out in style this year between Double-A and Triple-A. It’s not like he hasn’t been successful in past seasons, but what he has done in 2026 is nothing short of amazing.
He is currently hitting a robust .293/.381/.556 with 28 home runs, 88 RBI, and a 144 wRC+ in 111 games in the minors this year, through Monday. He has been arguably the best and most productive player in the Guardians’ system, and deserves to be in contention for a call-up.
Numerous theories about the potential reasons why he hasn’t received a promotion have circulated in recent weeks, but manager Stephen Vogt offered a more detailed take.

But again, when you have a player like that, you want to make sure that there’s opportunity to play every day, and you want to make sure that when they come up, that there’s a really good chance they’re not going back down.”

Velazquez is mashing against top competition in the minors, as he boasts a 134 wRC+ and 21 round-trippers in 75 games in Columbus alone. However, unless the Guardians are convinced that Nathaniel Lowe deserves to lose playing time, the former first-rounder will likely stay with the Clippers.
Lowe and David Fry alternate first base, while Chase DeLauter and Jose Ramirez see plenty of time from the DH spot, closing down potential playing time avenues for Velazquez.
Lowe, a deadline acquisition, started his Guardians career with several important hits, but has cooled off somewhat and now boasts a below-average 79 wRC+ as a member of the team after coming over from Cincinnati. He does have 15 RBI in 21 games (through Monday) in Cleveland, but he needs to pick up the pace if he wants to fend off Velazquez.
There’s no doubt that Velazquez is the future of the organization at first base, but the Guardians want to give Lowe a long leash to see if he can regain his stroke. After all, he had a 123 wRC+ as a member of the Reds before the trade.
At this point, the fact that Velazquez wouldn’t be eligible to play minor league games in the event of a lockout next year probably matters very little, not in the middle of a playoff push. However, Cleveland doesn’t want to call him up only to play him twice a week.
