The Cleveland Guardians saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end to the scalding hot Kansas City Royals on Friday. All good things must come to an end, but unfortunately the Guardians were walloped 8-3 by the Royals again on Saturday and are now turning to Parker Messick to help them avoid the sweep on Sunday.
It’s a disappointing outcome for a team fighting for its playoff lives, but manager Stephen Vogt didn’t sound too concerned after the game. He credited the Royals for playing so well lately as they have now won 12 of their last 13 games and preached the importance of staying patient.
“There’s a lot of time left. They’re a really good team,” Vogt said.

The Chicago White Sox have now won four in a row as well, pushing the Guardians back to a 4.5-game deficit in the AL Central. Cleveland’s lead for the third Wild Card spot is now down to just one game over the Baltimore Orioles.
Inconsistency has plagued the Guardians all year, and they have to avoid swooning again now that their easy stretch of games is behind them and they have to deal with a higher level of competition. The offense, rotation, and bullpen have rarely ever been pulling in the same direction for longer than a few games at a time, and if the Guardians are going to compete in October, that issue is going to have to be solved.
It’s encouraging to have a steady and positive voice like Vogt leading the way for Cleveland because he always does such a great job keeping things in perspective. Two losses aren’t the end of the world, but he knows this team can’t let this snowball and become a trend.
