Guardians Complete Biggest Rally Of The Season In Extra Inning Thriller

Cleveland trailed by five runs early and by one late, and it did not matter either time. The Guardians pulled off the biggest comeback of their season Tuesday night in Anaheim, beating the Angels 8-6 in 10 innings to extend their winning streak to six games and improve to a perfect 5-0 on this current road trip through Denver and Anaheim.

Steven Kwan tied a career high with five hits, and Angel Martinez robbed Mike Trout of a potential go ahead homer with a leaping catch at the center field fence in the eighth inning, helping set the stage for extra innings.

Jose Ramirez may have delivered the biggest signal of the night, going 3 for 6 with three doubles and five RBIs in what looked like the return of his offensive force after a long stretch of working his way back from hamate bone surgery on his left hand.

Manager Stephen Vogt could not hide his relief watching Ramirez finally look like himself again.

“We’ve been waiting for a night like this,” Vogt said.

Vogt continued by describing it as a true Jose night, one where Ramirez carried the team with strong swings from both sides of the plate. Ramirez admitted he is still not at 100 percent since being activated on July 20, but said that does not change his approach of simply trying to compete and help the team any way he can.

The night started poorly for Cleveland, as Gavin Williams was rocked for five runs on six hits in just 1 and 1 third innings, the second-shortest start of his career. The Guardians clawed back with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5, only for Los Angeles to answer immediately when Vaughn Grissom hit his second homer of the night off reliever Logan Allen to put the Angels back in front 6-5. Allen settled in from there, pitching three solid innings overall and helping save the rest of the bullpen for the later frames. Ramirez tied the game again in the eighth with a double, setting up the extra-inning drama that followed.

Cleveland scored twice in the 10th to finally put the game away, with Kwan starting the winning rally with a single to move automatic runner Brayan Rocchio to third, and Ramirez later delivering both runs with a double off Blake Weiman. Erik Sabrowski picked up the win after retiring the Angels on three straight strikeouts in the ninth, and Cade Smith closed it out in the 10th for his 35th save in 40 chances.

The win pushed Cleveland to 67-66 on the season, keeping the Guardians 2 and a half games behind the White Sox in the American League Central while extending their hold on the third and final wild card spot to a full game over Texas, which lost to Chicago on the same night.
