The Cleveland Guardians’ rotation is, by far, their best unit. Led by run-prevention master Parker Messick and strikeout king Gavin Williams, the group also has the talented Tanner Bibee, the reliable Joey Cantillo, and the steady Foster Griffin, all of whom are pitching well.
Waiting in the shadows is Slade Cecconi, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on August 7 with right arm fatigue. The 27-year-old certainly had his moments this year, but overall, he has been mediocre with a 5.07 ERA in 110 frames.
Still, even though the results he has gotten are far from elite, pitching depth is incredibly important in modern baseball. We have seen teams having their season derailed by injuries time and again, and the Guardians didn’t want that to happen to them. That’s why they traded four young players to get Griffin on August 3.
Cecconi has been working his way back from his ailment and is ready to start a rehab assignment in Columbus, according to Guardians Prospective.
“The Cleveland Guardians have assigned RHP Slade Cecconi to Triple-A Columbus to begin a rehab assignment,” he said.

Cecconi is expected to make at least a couple of starts in Triple-A, if not more, to slowly increase his stamina and, potentially, rejoin the rotation if there’s a need for it in September. However, if everyone stays healthy, there are other avenues the team can explore to include him on the roster.
Cecconi has some experience as a reliever: in fact, he was initially moved to the bullpen when Griffin was acquired. Another alternative would be using a six-man rotation to keep everyone fresh in the stretch run.
Since Cecconi has a minor league option left, he could stay in Triple-A until there’s an opening in the rotation, too. As you can see, having him back to full health should be the main objective because it gives the front office and manager Stephen Vogt some options to maneuver.
Cecconi might not be an ace or even a mid-rotation starter, but when he’s on, he can eat innings and represents solid organizational depth. The Guardians will have him make rehab starts for a couple of weeks. After that, we will see.
