Foster Griffin Opens Up About Finding His Rhythm With Guardians

The Cleveland Guardians have a negative 14-20 record in the second half. They are still under .500 for the season as a whole, at 65-66. However, they have won four straight games and six of their last eight. Yes, they have beaten weak competition in their two most recent series against the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies, but hey, wins are still wins, and they count in the standings.

On Sunday, they completed a sweep of the Rockies, winning the finale 7-2 at Coors Field behind deadline acquisition Foster Griffin. The left-hander wasn’t perfect, allowing two runs in five innings, but he made it work for the most part. He surrendered five hits and three walks, striking out four to get his 15th win of the regular season.

The southpaw spoke about getting more and more comfortable with his new team. His rapport with catcher Austin Hedges and Patrick Bailey is growing and improving, too.

“Yeah, I think each one felt more and more comfortable. Felt more like myself, the last two especially. And you know, the more I work with the catchers, the more we understand how we work off each other. So that’s been really nice to kind of get in a good rhythm,” Griffin said, per Mason Horodyski of News 5 Cleveland.

Griffin’s first start with the Guardians, on August 6, was a disaster, as he allowed five runs in four innings. After that, he has been excellent, with just four earned runs conceded in 16 frames. His ERA as a Guardian is now a solid 4.05 and is slowly improving.

Griffin might not throw very hard, but he is a crafty pitcher with a wide array of pitches, excellent command, and a high IQ. He knows how to pitch, and the Guardians love that about him. He is settling down as a reliable mid-rotation asset in Cleveland and is expected to be a useful piece of the puzzle as the team tries to sneak into the postseason.

As of Monday, the Guardians are 3.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox at the top of the AL Central and tied for the third and last Wild Card spot.
