Behind a rock-solid pitching performance by Gavin Williams, the Cleveland Guardians beat the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Thursday at Progressive Field. It was their first series win since late July, against the Reds in Cincinnati.
Cleveland is now 62-66, and even though they still have a lot of work to do before dreaming about making the postseason, getting a series win for the first time this month was a nice step in the right direction. The Guardians should take things step by step, and their first short-term goal should be to reach .500.

Williams took his record to 12-7 with the win, and his ERA to 3.72. He pitched 5.2 innings and allowed just a couple of runs, walking three and striking out a whopping 11 batters.
The Guardians needed an elite pitching performance, and Williams came through with one. Unlike Parker Messick on Wednesday, the right-hander had some run support from the go, as Cleveland scored three runs in the opening frame.
Steven Kwan walked, and Travis Bazzana singled. Jose Ramirez then laced another single to bring in Kwan with the first run of the game. Nathaniel Lowe followed with a sac fly that plated Bazzana to make it a 2-0 ballgame. Later in the inning, catcher Patrick Bailey drove in J-Ram with another knock.
With no outs and a runner at first base, Williams surrendered a two-run home run to Willy Adames, as the Giants cut the deficit to just one in the fourth. Fans already feared the worst: their starter unraveling and the bullpen failing to contain the opposing offense.
That didn’t happen, though, as Adames’ two-run shot represented the extent of the damage inflicted by San Francisco on Thursday afternoon. On the other hand, the Guardians had more runs in store.
The red-hot Kwan brought Bailey home with Cleveland’s fourth run on an RBI single in the sixth. Then, in the eighth, Brayan Rocchio extended the lead to 5-2 with another run-scoring single.
The Guardians racked up nine hits, all of them singles, on Thursday, but it was enough to get the much-needed series win. Tim Herrin, Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, and Cade Smith paved the way for the victory with 3.1 scoreless frames.
The only member of the starting lineup who didn’t log a hit was Nathaniel Lowe. Everyone else had at least one, and Bailey had two.
The Guardians will now travel to Colorado to start a series with the Rockies on Friday at Coors Field. Joey Cantillo will pitch the first game.
