Cleveland Guardians fans are extremely frustrated at the moment. They got to watch their best young pitcher, Parker Messick, toss 6.2 innings of one-run ball, which usually leads to a win, on Wednesday. Instead, the offense got shut out, and the San Francisco Giants took a 1-0 victory and tied the series.
We don’t need to tell you that the Guardians’ offense is a bottom-third unit in the league. You probably know that by now, mainly because the unit keeps sending out reminders of how inconsistent it is.
You rarely see manager Stephen Vogt calling out the offense in postgame interviews. He is known as a players’ manager, the one who has their back through thick and thin. That approach has earned two Manager of the Year Awards so far, and the respect and admiration of his players. Fans, on the other hand, tend to be frustrated at times.
“It’s the story of the Guardians’ starters’ lives right now. You go out, have this great outing, and you can’t push a run across. I understand fans are getting very upset over the same thing being said. Because the season’s slipping away, they’re mad. It is the exact same thing as what has happened with Kevin Stefanski. You hear [Stephen Vogt] in the postgame. He doesn’t sound mad, and you get mad at him for not being mad enough,” Carman said.

Dating back to July 21, Messick has made six starts. Do you know what his win-loss record during that span looks like? 1-3. And he has a brilliant 1.95 ERA in those six outings. He has an outstanding 4/42 BB/K ratio during that stretch, but the lifeless Guardians offense has limited his win output.
It hasn’t happened to Messick exclusively. We know that Tanner Bibee has gotten the worst run support in the league among qualified starters, and it’s a similar issue with the other members of the rotation as well.
What Carman says is that it may be time for the manager to call out the unit, at least subtly. Fans want him to light a fire under the offense so they can match the very talented pitching staff Cleveland has.
