Supporting the Cleveland Guardians has to feel like a roller-coaster ride for fans. One day, they score eight runs and rack up 12 hits, which is what happened on Tuesday, and the very next day, they are shut out and lose 1-0 to the San Francisco Giants at home. That’s what happened on Wednesday.
The best-of-three series is now tied. The Guardians were limited to six hits, and only one of them, a double by Travis Bazzana, went for extra bases. With the loss, Cleveland falls to 61-66 on the season.

Left-hander Parker Messick gave his team a magnificent start, keeping the Giants at one run and six hits over 6.2 innings. It wasn’t enough to avoid the loss, though, mainly because the offense didn’t show up to the ballpark.
Messick struck out 10 and didn’t walk anyone. His season ERA is down to a brilliant 2.54, but since he is backed by one of the worst offenses in baseball, his record is a rather mediocre 9-8.
With Rhys Hoskins being sent to the injured list with back issues, Chase DeLauter still not ready to return, and Jo Adell banged up and out of the lineup, former Guardians prospect Matt ‘Tugboat’ Wilkinson, Adrian Houser, and Dylan Smith carved up Cleveland’s offense with ease.
The only run of the game was scored in the fourth inning. With two outs, Victor Bericoto singled on a ground ball to shortstop Brayan Rocchio, scoring Rafael Devers and giving San Francisco all they would need to secure the win.
Angel Martinez and Angel Genao both went 2-for-4, and Bazzana and Austin Hedges had the other two hits of the night for the Guardians. Messick was amazing, and the bullpen, led by Hunter Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski, and Cade Smith, kept the team in the game, to no avail.
Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, Nathaniel Lowe, Petey Halpin and Brayan Rocchio combined to go 0-for-17 on the night.
The two teams will do it again on Thursday at 1:10 pm at Progressive Field. Landon Roupp will take the mound for the visitors, and Gavin Williams will try to give the Guardians a much-needed series win.
