The Cleveland sports talk airwaves have been filled with plenty of frustration over the last several weeks, but Tuesday’s blowout win over the Giants bought this Guardians team a little more patience from at least one prominent local voice. Ken Carman, speaking alongside Tony on 92.3 The Fan, made it clear he is holding off on any premature declarations about this season.
Given how poorly Cleveland had played since the All-Star break, the temptation to write this season off had clearly been building. Adell’s career night and the Guardians’ 8-1 win changed the tone of that conversation, at least for now.
Carman explained exactly where his head was at heading into the win.
“Season’s not over. Actually, if they would’ve lost yesterday, I think I was gonna come in here and go, ‘Put your name on it. Are you ready to call the season?’ The Guardians do this with their own social media. It is kind of fun. You will spend hell on the internet for a day or two. They take notice of anybody who puts out there, ‘Season’s over. Season’s done.’ Then, if they make a run, they’re going to save your stuff, and they’re going to let you hear it,” Carman said.
"Season's not over."

The win over the Giants came at a critical moment given the schedule ahead. Cleveland is now working through a stretch against four of the weakest teams in baseball, the Giants, Rockies, Angels and Royals, all teams with losing records well below .500. If the Guardians are the contender this front office believes they can still be, this is exactly the kind of stretch where that identity needs to show up in the win column.
Whether Tuesday’s win marks the start of a real turnaround or simply a temporary reprieve remains to be seen, but for now, voices like Carman’s are choosing to believe there is still real meaning left in this Cleveland season. With roughly forty games to go and the standings still jumbled enough to reward a hot streak, the Guardians have an opportunity in front of them to prove that patience was worth it.
