Nathaniel Lowe has proven to be a very valuable deadline acquisition for the Cleveland Guardians. The veteran first baseman is slashing .286/.297/.543 with two home runs and eight RBI in ten games with his new team. His solid 128 wRC+ makes him an asset for manager Stephen Vogt, at least against right-handed pitchers.
Rhys Hoskins usually starts when there’s a lefty on the mound, but he also plays against some righties, as part of that first base/designated hitter rotation. The veteran slugger boasts a 96 wRC+ this year, with 13 homers.
The Guardians happen to have a lefty-swinging budding star at first base in the minor leagues, specifically in Triple-A Columbus. It’s none other than Ralphy Velazquez.
Velazquez, the Guardians’ first-round pick in 2023, has hit a whopping 10 home runs in his last 15 games with the Clippers. He is blossoming right before our eyes, with a 134 wRC+ and 21 long balls between Double-A and Triple-A.
Is there a chance the Guardians decide to promote him to the major leagues to help kickstart their stagnant, inconsistent offense? Well, it’s certainly not impossible.
It’s important to note that, as Sleeper Guardians suggests, Velazquez has no platoon splits, which means he is not particularly weaker against lefties or righties. He mashes against both.
“Ralphy Velazquez minor league splits in 2026: vs LHP: .288/.373/.500. vs RHP: .282/.373/.529. Should Ralphy take over as the platoon 1B over Rhys Hoskins?” they asked.

The answer to their question, however, is complex. While he would certainly inject some life into the lineup, success right out of the gate is not guaranteed. It’s also important to consider that, with Lowe on board and hitting well, Velazquez wouldn’t play every day. Between the DH spot, first base, and an occasional outfield start, he could play a lot, though.
There are no platoon concerns regarding the young slugger, but the Guardians need to be mindful of his development and potential external circumstances. If a lockout occurs and the 2027 MLB season is delayed, those on the 40-man roster won’t be allowed to play minor league ball.
Velazquez is currently not part of the 40-man roster, but will need to be added if he’s going to be promoted this season. Maybe the Guardians will try to avoid that scenario to ensure he can get some development time if needed next year, but they could also use him now.
It’s a tricky situation, for sure. In any case, the Guardians have a potential star in Velazquez.
