One Guardians Prospect Is Making Strong Case For Late Season Callup

Ralphy Velazquez has spent much of the 2026 season looking like a slugger on a steady climb toward the majors, but over the past few weeks that climb has turned into a sprint. Cleveland’s top-ranked prospect put together another eye-popping performance Wednesday night, homering twice and matching career highs with three hits and five RBIs as Triple-A Columbus outslugged Omaha 15-7 at Huntington Park. With the season entering its final month, the power surge has put Velazquez squarely into the conversation for a late-season call-up.

MLB.com’s Michael Avallone detailed just how hot the 21-year-old has been during his current stretch.

“Velazquez’s big night was the latest in a scorching stretch in which the 6-foot-1, 240-pounder has found another gear. As the season enters its final month, Velazquez might have put himself into the conversation for a late-season callup by the Guardians. The 23rd overall pick in the 2023 Draft leads the Minors this month in homers (seven) and is second in RBIs (13),” Michael Avallone wrote.

Avallone laid out numbers that separate Velazquez from every other hitter in the minor leagues this month. Wednesday’s outburst included a three-run homer that left the bat at 107.5 miles per hour to cap a five-run first inning, followed by a two-run blast in the fifth that clanked off the top of the scoreboard in right-center. It marked his 13th home run for Columbus and 20th of the season overall, the second straight year he has reached that mark.

The production has pushed Velazquez’s Triple-A OPS to .823 and his overall line across two levels to .281 with 44 extra-base hits and 67 RBIs in 96 games. Drafted originally as a catcher before shifting to first base, his bat has remained the carrying tool of his profile throughout a career spent facing older competition at every stop.

For a Guardians organization already riding the momentum of Angel Genao’s early impact and Jace LaViolette’s recent promotion, Velazquez’s timing could not be better. If his power keeps translating at this pace, Cleveland’s front office may find it increasingly difficult to keep its top prospect off the roster as the stretch run continues.
