When the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 8-2 on their series opener on Friday, momentum was building towards a really positive week. With a sweep, the team could have tied the Pale Hose at the top of the AL Central.
Unfortunately, Cleveland fell on Saturday and Sunday to drop the series and the chance to get closer in the divisional race. Now, they are 58-61 and are suddenly tied with the Minnesota Twins at third place, behind the White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.
It was a rough weekend for Cleveland, but they still have some time to turn things around. They need to start stringing together some wins, though.
MLB reporter and analyst Anthony Castrovince pointed out that Cleveland hasn’t been able to get into ‘a sustained run’ at any point of the season, and highlighted the fact that, at some point, the win-loss record has to be trusted and should define a squad.
“The trade deadline was a week ago, and the emotional falloff in the span of a week is pretty jarring. It felt like a must-win series there in Chicago, and they just dropped the ball. You are what your record says you are at a certain point. They have a worse record than the team that traded one of the best pitchers in baseball. They definitely hit a rut here. This whole season has never felt like they’ve ever gotten a sustained run,” Castrovince said.

Right now, the Guardians are a mediocre baseball club. There’s no other way around it. They have more losses than wins, they are now fourth in the AL Central; and the division, if they don’t wake up of their doldrums, might start to really slip away soon.
They have won just two games in August, against six losses, and they haven’t won a series since late July against the Cincinnati Reds. Yes, Cleveland had a solid deadline, but is still dealing with Jose Ramirez’s iffy wrist and a highly inconsistent offense, among other things.
Again, they still have time to turn things around and go on a run, but this is looking like a particularly flawed baseball team.
