The Guardians dropped a tough one at home, falling 6-2 to the New York Mets in a game that got away from Cleveland in the middle innings. Joey Cantillo took the loss after allowing seven hits and two earned runs across five innings, walking two and striking out five, and the bullpen behind him could not slow down a Mets offense that broke the game open early. New York scored three runs in the second inning and never let Cleveland fully climb back into it. Chase DeLauter provided one of the lone bright spots offensively, going 1 for 2 with a run scored and three RBIs, doing the bulk of the damage in a lineup that otherwise struggled to find consistent contact. Jo Adell went 2 for 4 with a run and a walk in the loss, continuing to show flashes of the bat speed that made him such an intriguing deadline addition. Steven Kwan, Angel Martinez, Travis Bazzana and Brayan Rocchio each added a hit, but Cleveland could not turn those scattered knocks into sustained pressure against New York’s pitching staff. Slade Cecconi and Tim Herrin combined to hold the Mets in check out of the bullpen, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The loss drops Cleveland to 57 and 57 on the season, a reminder that even with a productive trade deadline behind them, the margin for error in a crowded American League race remains thin. The Guardians will look to regroup and get the newly reshaped roster clicking as they push through the second half toward the postseason chase.
