Cleveland actually jumped out early, scoring twice in the first inning before the game settled into a pitching stalemate through the middle innings. Arizona broke through with two runs in the fifth before things completely opened up in the seventh, when the Diamondbacks sent a wave of hitters to the plate and put up seven runs in the frame.

The Guardians did not go quietly. Cleveland answered with five runs of its own in the eighth inning, getting contributions up and down the lineup as Steven Kwan, Chase DeLauter, Rhys Hoskins and Petey Halpin all reached base and drove in runs during the rally. Kwan finished the night 3-5 with two RBIs, while DeLauter added a home run and two runs scored. Hoskins also went deep, driving in a pair, and Kyle Manzardo came off the bench to collect two hits in three at bats.
On the mound, Parker Messick worked into the fifth inning and struck out six, but he was charged with the damage that started to build before the bullpen took over. Colin Holderman kept things steady with a scoreless outing of his own, but Hunter Gaddis and Franco Aleman each ran into trouble in relief, combining to allow seven runs across less than an inning of work as Arizona’s lineup continued to do damage against Cleveland’s pitching staff.
The result drops Cleveland to 56 wins and 56 losses on the season, a stark reminder of how quickly things can unravel even in a game where the offense showed real signs of life. Fourteen hits and eight runs would be more than enough to win most nights, but Arizona’s own offensive outburst was simply too much to overcome.
Cleveland will look to bounce back and salvage the series finale as the team continues to navigate a crowded playoff picture with the trade deadline now just days away. A split of the weekend series would still keep the Guardians within striking distance in a tightly bunched American League Central race, but nights like Saturday underscore just how unforgiving the margin for error has become down the stretch.
