The Cleveland Guardians have earned a reputation as one of the more active teams around the trade deadline in recent years, but according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, this year could look a lot different.
Passan included Cleveland in his broader deadline preview, examining the roster and outside factors that could shape how aggressive the front office is willing to be before Monday’s deadline arrives. Unlike in past seasons, the Guardians enter this deadline with very little pending free agency to worry about, a factor that typically drives urgency in trade decisions. According to Passan, only Rhys Hoskins and Shawn Armstrong have contracts set to expire, leaving Cleveland with far less pressure to move pieces before they hit the open market.
Passan laid out the case for why this deadline could be quieter than usual for the Guardians.
“Cleveland has maneuvered plenty at past deadlines. But between their lack of impending free agents — only Rhys Hoskins’ and Shawn Armstrong’s contracts expire — and a roster that hasn’t proved itself entirely worthy of a significant investment in prospect capital, the Guardians could find themselves more or less standing pat,” Passan wrote.
Passan pointed to two main factors behind that prediction. The lack of impending free agents removes one of the usual motivations for making a move, since there is little urgency to trade a player before losing him for nothing in the offseason. He also raised questions about whether the current roster has shown enough this season to justify investing significant prospect capital in a rental or short-term addition, a concern that fits with an offense that has struggled for consistency for much of the year.
Whether that prediction holds up remains to be seen, especially with Chris Antonetti previously indicating a willingness to pursue offensive help if the right opportunity presents itself.
With the deadline now just days away, the Guardians front office will need to decide quickly whether standing pat is truly the right approach or whether the persistent offensive struggles ultimately force its hand.
