The rarity of the streak stands out even more when considering it has occurred only 23 times across six decades of recorded pitching data, placing Williams among an elite group of arms capable of racking up strikeouts at that kind of pace over a monthlong stretch.

Williams entered Tuesday already leading the American League in strikeouts on the season, and his latest gem only widened that gap. Despite the pitching brilliance, Cleveland was shut out 2-0 in the game, continuing a frustrating trend where dominant starts have not translated into wins because of the offense’s ongoing struggles. It marked the ninth time this season Cleveland has been shut out entirely.

The larger story here is what this stretch means for Williams individually. Four straight starts at this level place him alongside some of the most dominant strikeout stretches in franchise and league history, and there is little reason to think he will slow down given how sharp his stuff has looked throughout July. For a Cleveland rotation that has quietly become one of the better units in baseball, Williams has emerged as its most consistent weapon over the past month.
