The Cleveland Guardians could not find any answers at the plate again on Sunday, and this time even a strong start from the rotation was not enough to prevent a fifth straight loss.
Lefthander Parker Messick was outstanding across 7 and 2/3 innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out six and walking none. It was one of the better outings by a Cleveland starter all season, yet the Guardians still walked away with a 1-0 defeat to close out the series in St. Petersburg. Cleveland managed a single hit on the afternoon, courtesy of Steven Kwan, as the offense continued a stretch that has now produced almost no runs across the last several games. The loss dropped Cleveland to 54 wins and 53 losses, while Tampa Bay improved to 62 and 43.
The team’s official account did not sugarcoat how the series had gone.

Cleveland was outscored badly across the three-game set and managed only a handful of hits total, a rough finish considering the pitching staff largely held its own the entire series. Messick’s performance Sunday was a clear example of that, as he retired batter after batter before Tampa Bay finally scratched across its lone run in the fourth inning. Reliever Colin Holderman came on to record the final out and preserve a scoreless final frame of work, but by then the damage from the offense’s silence was already done.
Chase DeLauter drew two walks in the game, and Kwan’s single stood as the only hit the Guardians could produce against Tampa Bay pitching. Everyone else in the lineup, including Jose Ramirez, Brayan Rocchio, Travis Bazzana and Angel Martinez, went hitless on the day. It marks one of the quietest offensive showings of the season for a Cleveland team that has now gone through consecutive series with almost no consistent production at the plate.
The larger concern for Cleveland is not a single game but the pattern building around it. Pitching has largely kept the Guardians competitive throughout this stretch, yet that effort keeps going to waste without any run support behind it. With the trade deadline just over a week away, performances like Messick’s Sunday only add to the case that this roster needs some kind of jolt in the batter’s box before the calendar turns to August.
