Stephen Vogt Has Honest Admission About Loss To Twins

The Cleveland Guardians had every reason to feel good about Thursday afternoon at Progressive Field, and for seven innings they did.

Gavin Williams carried the game on his shoulders, working seven shutout innings and piling up 11 strikeouts without walking a single batter. It was one of the sharpest outings he has turned in all year. Patrick Bailey backed him with a home run in the fifth inning that gave Cleveland its only run of the afternoon. On paper, that combination usually wins a ballgame.

Instead, the Guardians walked away with a 3-1 loss in 12 innings, and manager Stephen Vogt did not dance around the reason why.

Following the defeat, Vogt spoke candidly about the state of his offense, particularly in the moments that mattered most.

The frustration Vogt referenced was not about scoring one run. It was about how many chances Cleveland had to add more and simply could not convert.

Those missed chances eventually cost Cleveland the game. Minnesota tied things up in the eighth when pinch hitter Alan Roden slapped a single off closer Cade Smith, wiping out what should have been a signature win built around Williams and the rotation. The bullpen then held the line through three extra innings, but the Guardians could never turn any of those seventeen chances into an insurance run.

For Cleveland, this is the kind of loss that lingers. Getting a start like the one Williams delivered and not finding a way to protect it can sit with a clubhouse, especially when so many scoring chances came and went without a result.

Vogt has been direct with his team all season when something needs to be said, and Thursday was no different. Pitching and defense were not the problem. The concern now belongs to a lineup that had chance after chance and could not deliver when it counted.

Cleveland will look to regroup quickly as the schedule rolls on, with the offense needing to find some answers before missed opportunities like Thursday’s start to define the stretch run.
