The Cleveland Guardians had lost their first series of the second half this past weekend, dropping two of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. They looked awful, particularly on Sunday, with several baserunning and mental blunders.
They did, however, bounce back impressively on Monday’s opener against the Minnesota Twins, with a resounding 13-4 win that allowed them to keep up the pace with the Chicago White Sox, leaders of the AL Central by just one game. Cleveland racked up 19 hits on that one, and a whopping seven home runs.
Two of them were hit by designated hitter Rhys Hoskins, who managed to increase his wRC+ from 93 to 99 in one night. The veteran praised his team’s ability to bounce back after a tough series.
“We needed that game as a group. Sunday was just sloppy, really. It’s unfortunate it came in a game where we had a chance to win a series at home, but I think even more importantly is how a team responds,” Hoskins said. “We came out ready to play tonight, not sulking or holding on to too much about Sunday. I think it shows a lot of good things about who we are as a group that we were able to respond with a game like this.”
Hoskins, one of the most experienced members of the Guardians’ roster, has been around long enough to know that it’s not about how hard you get hit: it’s about how you bounce back from the adversity. And the way that the much-criticized Guardians’ offense responded on Monday was nothing short of amazing.
Petey Halpin hit his first two home runs, Hoskins reached 11 in 2026, and Travis Bazzana, Brayan Rocchio, and Patrick Bailey also went yard. Chase DeLauter collected four hits, as well, and remains one of the hottest hitters on the team.
If the Guardians can come close to replicating Monday’s offensive effort almost every day until Jose Ramirez returns from injury, they will be fine. The problem is that nights like that one have become few and far between.
Consistency is the key word here. If the offense can find more of it, Cleveland will definitely be going places in 2026. It could be a special year, but everyone needs to pull in the same direction.
