Cooper Ingle had already delivered one of the more memorable moments of Cleveland’s recent stretch with his first major league hit, and his comments afterward revealed just how quickly the clubhouse made him feel at home. The rookie catcher, drafted in the fourth round out of Clemson in 2023, arrived in Cleveland after a standout run at Triple A Columbus that included a .284 batting average and 12 home runs across 221 plate appearances. Within his first day in the clubhouse, Ingle found a level of support that helped settle his nerves before he ever stepped into the batter’s box.
“Right away, walk in the door, and you know, Austin Hedges gives me the biggest hug anyone has given me all year,” Ingle said.

Drafted and developed as a catcher, he has spent most of his career working behind the plate, but Cleveland’s depth at the position, anchored by Hedges and Patrick Bailey, pushed the organization to begin grooming him as an outfielder at Columbus earlier this season.
Ingle has built his game around an advanced approach at the plate, drawing walks at a rate well above the league average throughout his three professional seasons. That patience showed up immediately in his first career hit, a two RBI single he lined through a drawn-in infield during Saturday’s win over Seattle. Manager Stephen Vogt has already praised the impact players like Ingle and Kahlil Watson have provided during an injury-riddled stretch, and the rookie’s comments suggest the clubhouse environment has made the transition considerably easier.
With Cleveland still searching for consistent offensive production from several spots in the lineup, Ingle’s blend of plate discipline and newfound outfield flexibility gives the Guardians another option as the season moves into its second half. If the early returns and the clubhouse chemistry are any indication, his path to consistent playing time may come sooner than originally expected.
