Last year, Hunter Gaddis was an average organizational depth starter, who posted a 4.50 ERA in 42 innings alternating between the rotation and the bullpen.
He averaged a little over 93 mph with his fastball, and none of his pitches looked particularly effective.
It’s funny how things can change from year to year depending on the circumstances, though.
The Guards decided to put Gaddis in their bullpen, where he could let his full fastball velocity go since he would be pitching in shorter spurts.
To their surprise, he has been one of the best relievers on the team, even more impressive than Emmanuel Clase statistically speaking.
“LET HUNTER EAT! Transitioning to the bullpen has been smooth sailing for Hunter Gaddis so far,” the Guardians tweeted, with some quotes and videos of his improved stuff in relief.

Of course, with his fastball now averaging over 96 mph and his breaking ball faster and tighter, he is missing more bats than ever before.
In 2024, he has a perfect 0.00 ERA in 12.1 innings.
He has conceded just six hits and walked three guys, while striking out an impressive 16.
What a difference from last year!
Gaddis went from an afterthought to being a key reliever on MLB’s best and most surprising team.
It’s been quite a turnaround, but he still has to prove that he can maintain the quality of his stuff over the course of the long season.
He has the tools and the opportunity to do it.
