Jose Ramirez cannot play right now. What he can do, he made clear, is everything else.
The day after being diagnosed with a left hamate bone fracture that will send him to the injured list, Ramirez addressed the media at Progressive Field and delivered a message to his teammates that was as simple.
“Yeah, that’s who I am,” Ramírez said when asked if he would continue bringing energy to the clubhouse and dugout. “I’m going to continue doing it in any way I can because I like to do it with the guys.”

The hamate fracture takes his bat away. It does not take away who he is in that clubhouse, and his brief exchange with reporters was his way of making a quiet promise to everyone wearing a Cleveland uniform that the most important part of his contribution will continue uninterrupted.
Ramirez is batting .242 on the season with 10 home runs, 33 RBI, and a .772 OPS across 248 at bats. Since his move to the two hole in the lineup on May 13, he had been the hottest hitter in the American League, batting .305 with nine doubles, four home runs, and 17 RBI before the injury ended his afternoon on Saturday. The production that lineup spot will need to replace is real and significant.
But the thing Ramirez is vowing to protect is the thing that cannot be quantified in any statistical category. The energy in the dugout. The daily reminder that this group competes at a certain level because its leader demands it simply by showing up and being exactly who he is, whether he has a bat in his hand or not.
Yeah, that’s who he is. The Guardians are counting on it.
