Stephen Vogt has already done things in Cleveland that no one expected. Now he is being asked to do something that might top all of it.
Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com put the scope of the challenge into its full historical context, and the challenge he is facing could be his biggest one yet.
“This is Vogt’s third season as Guardians manager. He’s led them to two AL Central titles, winning two manager of the year awards along the way. The first year he replaced the winningest manager in franchise history in Terry Francona. The second year he overcame the biggest deficit in MLB history. In his third year, all he has to do is to protect a slim first-place lead after losing his best player for a significant amount of time with more than half the season left,” Hoynes wrote.
In year one, Vogt inherited Terry Francona’s seat, one of the most respected managerial chairs in the American League, and won the division. Year two, he orchestrated the biggest deficit comeback in MLB history, capped by Brayan Rocchio’s walk-off homer on the final day of the regular season, and won another division title and another Manager of the Year award. Now in year three, with Jose Ramirez headed to the IL with a left hamate bone fracture, Vogt is being asked to hold together a first-place team through a stretch of the schedule that will test every roster management decision he makes.
Cleveland is 39-33 with a half-game lead over the Chicago White Sox. The AL Central race has been tighter than anyone anticipated, driven largely by a White Sox club that has been one of the pleasant surprises of the 2026 season. The trade deadline is August 3rd, and the front office must now make decisions about reinforcements with the knowledge that their best player will be unavailable for a significant portion of what remains. The schedule ahead includes series against legitimate contenders. The margin for error is thin.
Saturday was a preview of what lies ahead. The Guardians lost three players to injuries, shuffled their lineup beyond recognition, and still beat Tarik Skubal and the Tigers 3-1. Vogt admitted it was the most overwhelmed he has felt in a big league game. They won anyway.
Year three of the Stephen Vogt era just got significantly harder. History says he will find a way.
