Saturday was a brutal day for Cleveland Guardians fans as the team’s win over the Detroit Tigers was marred by injuries suffered by Angel Martinez, Chase DeLauter, and Jose Ramirez. The next few weeks and potentially months due to Ramirez facing a potential two-month absence are going to be telling for the offense, and we’ll see in the next day or two what the contingency plan is to deal with all these injuries.
During this time, the team is going to need to rely more on the pitching staff. As dark as Saturday was, an exciting development has been young reliever Daniel Espino’s promotion to the big leagues, especially when you consider the long bumpy road he took to get to this point.
Cade Cracas of The Daily Guards discussed this in a recent episode and shed light on Espino’s incredible story. Finally healthy, Espino has made it to the Guardians at age 25 and will hopefully see his first live action soon, which will be a heartwarming culmination to a painful past few years.
“He’s shown that he’s not afraid of adversity…across the span of five years, he will have played in 27 minor league games,” said Cracas.

Espino used to be a starter and was Cleveland’s top prospect prior to all the injuries, but he has gotten quite comfortable coming out of the bullpen. Prior to this year, he had made just five appearances since 2021, but he looked great in his 22 games with Columbus this year.
It was great to finally see him healthy and see the talent that made him a top prospect on full display. The electric fastball is still there and it’s not hard to envision him carving out an immediate pivotal role in this bullpen.
The Guardians are still dealing with the absence of Erik Sabrowski, who should be returning over the next week or two, and if Espino can impress in his first few appearances, he could make a strong case to stick around even when everyone is healthy. He is an easy player to root for due to his lengthy injury history and with the offense going through a brutal time, beefing up the bullpen isn’t a bad approach to counteract that potential negative impact.
