The Cleveland Guardians are making a significant move ahead of Friday night’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers, and it is one that the Cleveland fan base has been waiting on for a long time.
Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports that the Guardians are promoting Daniel Espino from Triple-A Columbus.
“The Guardians are set to promote Daniel Espino from Triple-A Columbus ahead of tonight’s series opener against the Tigers, according to a team source,” Stebbins reported.

Espino is not just any prospect. He is one of the most talented and most anticipated arms in the entire Cleveland organization, a pitcher whose journey to the big leagues has been defined by remarkable ability and equally remarkable adversity. The 25-year-old right-hander from Panama was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft with the 24th overall pick out of Georgia Premier Academy in Statesboro, Georgia. From the moment he signed, scouts and evaluators pointed to his electric stuff as the kind of arsenal that could anchor a major league rotation for years.
What followed was a years-long battle with injuries that tested every ounce of patience the organization and the player could summon. Espino missed significant time repeatedly, spending stretches on the 60-day injured list that would have derailed lesser competitors. He was placed on the Columbus 60-day IL in March 2025 before being activated in September of that year, then was optioned back to Columbus at the start of spring training in March 2026. Through all of it, the belief in what he could become never wavered inside the Cleveland organization.
The timing of this promotion carries obvious context. Cleveland has lost six of its last seven games, fallen half a game behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, and watched Joey Cantillo struggle through three consecutive starts with a 12.27 ERA during that stretch.
The 6-foot, 225-pound right-hander has been healthy and building his case at Triple-A Columbus in 2026, and the Guardians have clearly seen enough to make the call.
Cleveland is 37-33, trailing the White Sox by half a game, and opening a homestand against Detroit with a roster that desperately needs a competitive spark. Espino has waited years for this moment. Friday night at Progressive Field, he finally gets it.
