The Nolan Jones experiment has officially ended. On Thursday evening, the Cleveland Guardians announced a stunning transaction.
It wasn’t shocking per se, because it was clear that Jones had no future in the organization. It was surprising because it involved trading him to a division rival that happens to be leading the AL Central division above them by half a game as of Thursday night.
“News: The Guardians announced they have traded Nolan Jones and cash to the White Sox in exchange for $250,000 in international bonus pool money,” Guardians insider Tim Stebbins posted on X.

The decision to bring back Jones for $2 million back in the offseason was criticized by some because other talented players were waiting in the wings. They did it anyway, hoping that he could recapture the form that made him a star in 2023 with the Colorado Rockies.
That year, Jones slashed a cool .297/.389/.542 with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. He posted a stellar 137 wRC+.
After struggling with a 69 wRC+ in an injury-riddled 2024 in the mountains, the Guardians traded for him ahead of the 2025 campaign. He couldn’t bounce back and posted a 72 wRC+.
Cleveland could have non-tendered him this offseason, but chose to retain him. After a rough spring, he didn’t make the team and was sent to Triple-A, where he has thrived with a .275/.385/.460 with eight home runs and a 124 wRC+ in 52 games.
The up-and-coming White Sox have managed to develop several talented players in the outfield, so they probably aren’t looking at Jones as an MLB starter just yet. They will give him a chance to impress eventually, though.
It’s fair to say that Jones will have more of a chance to break through and reclaim his spot as an impact major leaguer in Chicago. The Guardians have Steven Kwan, Chase DeLauter, Angel Martinez, Daniel Schneemann, and Stuart Fairchild in the majors, plus Khalil Watson, Petey Halpin, and CJ Kayfus knocking on the door in Triple-A. Additionally, Cooper Ingle and Ralphy Velazquez are being tested in the outfield.
The Guardians can certainly put those $250,000 in international bonus money to good use, and are probably happy to shed some of Jones’ salary in the process.
