It may take much longer than a player might hope to make his major league debut. Even though it looks like it may never happen, it is very difficult to give up on that dream.
With fewer minor league teams, it is also more difficult to keep going and find a place to play. Yet, patience can be rewarded if someone is willing to wait for the next opportunity.
That is turning out to be the case for former Cleveland Guardians prospect Nick Mikolajchak, a pitcher who has signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins.

An 11th-round pick by Cleveland in the 2019 MLB Draft, Mikolajchak was a relief pitcher in the minor leagues, making his pro debut with 13 games for Mahoning Valley. After the pandemic, the right-hander appeared in 30 games for Akron with a 3.18 ERA in 2021, and was promoted to Triple-A Columbus the next season, where he had a 3.04 ERA in 47 appearances in 2022.
He looked to be in line for a major league roster spot, but an elbow injury suffered in spring training sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. Mikolajchak put himself back on track with a 3.50 ERA in 32 games for Columbus in 2024, but he was released in July 2025 after making 26 appearances with a 4.75 ERA.
From there, Mikolajchak joined York in the independent Atlantic League and helped them win the championship. In 19 relief appearances, he had 16 scoreless outings, posting a 1.93 ERA and allowing just 11 hits with 27 strikeouts in 18.2 innings.
According to the league’s website, he became a successful starting pitcher this season, going 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA. He allowed 32 hits and 10 walks in 35.1 innings, with 31 strikeouts in his six starts.
It is unclear if the Twins plan to use him as a starter or a reliever, but it is clear that they are getting someone who has done everything he can to keep his major league dream alive.
